Puyo Puyo 7 is the latest game released in the Puyo Puyo series.

Characters

Gameplay

Puyo Puyo 7 includes a few different modes, although no where near the amount as in 15th Anniversary.

Transformation
The main focus of the game. You either become a child or become an adult when you enter this mode. When you are a child, your board size increases to 10x18 and becomes similar to Fever mode, with the pre-made chains ranging from a 8 to 30 chain. When you become an adult, your board size decreases to 3x6 and becomes similar to Giant Puyo mode in 15th Anniversary. You keep making chains until your timer runs out, and those chains are added together for a possibility of up to a 99 chain.
Puyo Puyo
This mode emulates quite accurately the gameplay of original Puyo Puyo.
Puyo 2
This mode emulates the gameplay of Puyo Puyo TSU
Fever
This is Fever mode. It is identical to the mode in 15th Anniversary.
Mission
In mission mode, You are given a task which you must complete before your opponents.

Famitsu scans

Notable points confirmed by this scan are:

  • Arle and Carbuncle are now available as separate playable characters again (their tiny 16x8 icons can be seen in the screenshot on the left); it is reasonable to assume that Popoi will also be re-available in a similar fashion.
  • There is a new Daihenshin (Great Transformation) mode available which looks to be the staple of this game. It allows the player to switch into the Big Puyo or Small Puyo modes from Puyo Puyo~n for a limited time. Big Puyo halves the board size to 3x6 (as opposed to 6x12) and Small Puyo nearly doubles it to 10x18. The timers are also now allowed to go above the previous 30 second maximum as seen in the right screenshot. The Fever gauge has also been redesigned into a straight vertical line instead of the curved series of dots, though this is specific to Daihenshin mode.
  • The game looks set to be called Puyo Puyo 7 for its actual release.
  • Characters are available in two different styles: a highschool uniform style and a style based on previous games. Arle's outfit in this game is a mixture of her ~n and 15th outfits.
  • Carbuncle's design has reverted to his Madou design.
  • Skeleton-T is in the game. It's therefore likely that other Madou characters will also be brought in, just like in Puyo 15th, though only 6 characters from the Madou series were in said game.
  • The silhouette seen on previous teaser sites is revealed to be a new character known as Andou Ringo, though this was revealed earlier in the fourth teaser.

Newer info

  • Photo showing characters Carbuncle, Draco, Feli, Klug, Lemres, Raffine, Rulue, Satan, Schezo, Sig, Skeleton T and Suketoudara.

Background

Starting on about February 12, Sega created a little teaser site promising information about a new game of theirs, known as Project RINGO. Being that the only information given were silhouettes of a girl throwing an apple, most people didn't speculate much about what the new game would be. Still, the extreme similarities between the way the silhouette and PPF-style characters was enough to get some people (myself not included) hoping for a new Puyo game. The teaser promised more information at a later specified date

Of course, with Sega being typical 16k2f03.jpg, the big "reveal" ended up being another trailer teasing a few more graphics, the phrase "What's mean 247?", and another date to watch out for. This blue-balling cat-and-mouse game went on all the way until March 24th, when they released a final trailer showing distinctively Puyo graphics and characters, and a set date for a formal announcement in the April 3rd issue of Famitsu.

Now that scans of the issue have been linked, we've got confirmation that the game indeed is Puyo Puyo 7.

Teasers

Feburary 12

This was the first mention of Project Ringo, and this was when the first teaser was released. There wasn't much information given, as all it showed were various silhouettes of a girl throwing an apple, and as a result many people didn't have an idea what this was. Some people have speculated that this was a new Puyo Puyo game due to similarities between the style of the silhouette and Puyo characters.

Feburary 24

The second teaser released, still not much was given. This time, many numerous equations were shown, all equaling 247. At the end, the message "What's mean 247?" was shown. Some people then speculated that this could be a math or educational game due to the equations.

March 12

The third teaser released, this time no characters were shown. Instead, the trailer contained a classroom with voices from three different people. There were more math equations in the trailer, all equaling 247. This trailer ended with "One day, at a classroom..."

There was some speculation that those three people could have been Lemres, Satan, and the then mystery girl (Andou Ringo). These lines are actually from the ending of Puyo Puyo 7, and they are spoken by (in order) Maguro, Risukuma, and Andou Ringo.

March 24

The fourth and final teaser, this time it showed the complete image of this mystery character, who later revealed herself to be Andou Ringo. This teaser also revealed Project Ringo to be Puyo Puyo 7, indirectly, due to the following reasons:

  • A green puyo is seen on Andou Ringo's head.
  • Amitie, Arle, and Carbuncle can be seen in the background.
  • A green puyo can be seen in the background.
  • The only math equation: √587917009, comes out to 24247.
  • Sometimes, Amitie, Arle, or Carbuncle would say Sega instead of Andou Ringo.

April 3

The Puyo Puyo 7 logo was added to the Project Ringo website and all four teasers can be watched. Sega also answers the question "What's mean 247?" (the answer is Puyo 7).

The previous version (24th March-2nd April) appears to confirm RINGO being a Puyo game, as it shows Amitie, Arle and Carbuncle in the background, though this isn't confirmed. Older updates gave recurring numbers of 247, hinting at the name (and meaning) of the game.
