Ecolo (also known as Ekoro) is a mysterious dark character who first appears in Puyo Puyo 7.

The exact origin of Ecolo's name is unknown, though it could come from (kokoro; heart). This is supported by the fact that Ringo states he "toyed with other people's hearts." It could also be derived from コロコロ (corocoro; roughly a fat , bouncy, spherical object), since Ecolo is very round, and exclaims "byoun byoun" during transformation.

Ecolo is also the only final boss character besides Satan to have more than one musical theme.

History

Puyo Puyo 7

In Puyo Puyo 7, Ecolo serves as the main antagonist of the game, though why exactly is not yet clear, at the moment. He can be unlocked by completing the games story mode, and uses Accord's dropset from the previous games, likely to make up for her absence.

During the events of the story, it is revealed that Dark Arle was actually Ecolo using Arle's body. He apparently wanted to bury Andou Ringo's world in Puyo just for his amusement. After being beaten out of Arle's body, he wanted to possess Ringo, but she wasn't about to let that happen! After foiling Ecolo's little game a second time, Ecolo decided that all worlds would suffer and be buried in Puyo, so he began to break down all worlds to gain the power to do this. Ringo could only watch, until Amitie and Arle escaped the space warp he trapped them in (along with apparently everyone else, too). The three girls teamed up to battle Ecolo one last time. They had defeated him, and apparently, it sends everyone back to their own respective worlds unharmed.

It also appears that Ecolo had took control of Maguro's and Risukuma's body during the events, as both of them say they need help and that they are being controlled. Unlike Dark Arle, however, they did not change their forms.

In Transformation, Ecolo transforms into shadowy doppelgangers of Feli and Klug in Mini Puyo Fever and Mega Puyo Rush, respectively. Outside of these modes, Ecolo takes the form of a shadowy Ringo and steals borrows all of her animations, aside from the winning, losing and transforming animations, which are his own. This, along with the question mark on his forehead, make Ecolo the third asymmetrical character in the game.

Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary

In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Ecolo yet again serves as the main antagonist of this game. After Risukuma's experiment explodes, he is one of the characters that is sent to Primp Town. In this game, Ecolo has lost all memory of what happened. He tries to make everyone happy in order to retrieve his memory. Finally, he asked Satan whether he could use his power to grant each and every wish everyone has. As a result, Ringo, Arle, and Amitie go to Satan's castle to stop them.

His appearance in this game is notably different, as he's now purple instead of black, he's notably fatter, and has smaller eyes. He has an human-like alternate outfit in the game, known as Unusual Ecolo. In this game, he uses his own animations instead of reusing those of other characters.
