Madou Monogatari I

Young six-year old Arle must complete a test by scaling a large tower and destroying Cockatrice and Fudoushi (Mamono in the MSX version) so she can graduate from kindergarten. In the Gamegear version, Camus will appear now and then helping you on your quest and take part of your hits from Fudoushi, but only if you heal him. In the PC98 version, you never fight Cockatrice.

Just before the final boss, Fudoushi/Mamono tricks Arle into seeing a mirage of the exit of the tower and her classmates turning into hideous creatures with their faces melting and eyes leaking out terrifying her. Arle defeats him and exits afraid that her friends would be terrible creatures, but they appear normal.

The chapter ends with her graduating and showing her, over the years, growing up.

The game, along with its two sequels, was originally released for the MSX and PC98 in 1990 and 1991 respectively. There are major differences between the two versions, with the biggest difference being the final boss; Mamomo in the MSX version, and Fudoushi in the PC98 release. The PC98 version also has significatly darker graphics and different enemies, and more realistic enemy designs. In 1996 it was re-released for the PC Engine Arcade CD, with a complete graphical overhaul, an animated opening, and full voice acting - even the battle messages were voiced. Despite being based off of the PC98 version, it has several spells not seen in other versions of the game. Also in 1996, it got ported to the Sega Genesis, as Madou Monogatari: Genesis. This version is much brighter, and the tower's layout is significantly different. It also has a completely different battle system. Camus's role was also expanded, and some new characters were added. This is also the only version of the game where the scene with Arle's classmates melting is not present. The game was ported to the Sega Gamegear in late 1993 with cutesier enemy designs, but maintaining the original battle system, cutscenes, and dungeon layout.

Madou Monogatari II

Madou Monogatari 2, also known as "EPISODE II: CARBUNCLE," was the most popular of the three games and also the first one created. It takes place eleven years later than the first one. Arle is sixteen now. When she encounters Schezo Wegey, he says "I want you," which became a running gag ever since. In the Gamegear version, Lynx lures Arle to Schezo, showing how they encountered.

Arle is warped to a dungeon and most of her powers are gone. She tricks demon guards with sex appeal and snatches the key escaping. In the Gamegear version, there's a dead body in one of the rooms that frightens Arle.

In the PC98 and Gamegear version, she fights Dark Dragon before Schezo, who gets burnt to a crisp and shrinks, leaving his dead skin behind. She meets a small bird, Miilu, who ends up being useless. She punts him away.

She sees light of the exit but Schezo notices her escaping and fights her. In the PC98 version, Schezo is decapitated but the bloody head manages to attack still. After you defeat him, he passes on and you don't see him again (except in the Gamegear version where you meet him again a few times.)

In the PC98 version, after you defeat Schezo, you fight a rotting test body which is connected to the walls of the exit. After Arle escapes, she sees old ruins and decides to investigate it. She finds a letter on the ground, apparently revealing that she was expected to come.

After Arle heads to the final level, she hears about a powerful dragon Carbuncle. The map is shaped like him as well. She heads to the warp point, but first meets Satan, who finds her beautiful and wants to marry her (Schezo appears for a short time in the cutscene of the Gamegear version, and Satan doesn't have his horns and wings.) She fights Satan and defeats the unholy one himself (Pigra also will appear and heal you if you pay him 100000 gold before the battle.)

The games ends with Carbuncle, who is not as fearsome as seemed and is afraid of Arle, seeing how she defeated Satan. He quickly trusts her and they quickly become friends.

Madou Monogatari III

The game takes place not too long after Madou Monogatari 2. Rulue overhears that Arle is Satan's fiance and becomes angered by it. Arle is clueless about her jealousy and thus takes her casually, but Rulue summons Minotaur to chase her into a forest.

Arle manages to escape out of the forest dungeon but her hands are stained due to frostbite. She meets a merchant on her way through town and requests the merchant to cure the frostbite on her hands. Finally, she returns to Rulue's mansion to fight her. Rulue sends Minotaur to fight Arle, but Arle defeats him, ending the game.

In the Gamegear version, a frog follows Arle around on her adventure, you get a new pink armor, fight an Egyptian Guardian, Carbuncle gets sick and is medicated by Minotaur, and Rulue is the final boss instead.

After Arle defeats them, Rulue is impressed by her magic and thinks she would be perfect as Satan's wife. In the Gamegear version, though, she still is angered by it, but the frog, who turns out to be Satan this whole time, appears and tells them that he wants Arle as his wife. They both send him flying, unimpressed.

In the end, Rulue and Arle set aside their differences and watch the sunset, ending the trilogy.
