Minotauros (interchangeably known as Minotaur) is Rulue's intimidating bodyguard. Though he tries to pull off an intimidating personality, in reality he's fairly sensitive and nice. He only acts aggressive for the sake of trying to impress his charge, who he secretly harbors a crush on. He is often seen carrying around an axe, which he uses as his primary weapon. He is also a rather dangerous opponent, with his most notable technique simply being titled "Ichigeki", meaning 'Strike'.

Biography

Appearance

Minotauros looks precisely like his namesake: the classic minotaur of legend. He usually wears a green sleeveless jacket over a white tank top (sometimes depicted as a white T-shirt instead), alongside a pair of his jeans. More often than not, he also appears barefoot. His right eye appears to have been scratched out, leaving only his left eye active.

Personality

While he is intimidatingly powerful and should not be taken lightly, Minotauros is very much a self-sacrificing individual. He goes to great lengths to meet Rulue's expectations and as her bodyguard, is very protective of her, to the point of taking things poorly even when his charge is slandered in front of his face and ultimately dedicating his life to her. He is also quite pleasant to be around, as seen when he and Arle have a perfectly casual conversation in Minna until the latter points out that Rulue doesn't treat him with the proper respect, despite his devotion towards her, which he takes as slander towards her name, prompting him to attack Arle instead.

Abilities

While it is debatable just how much magic potential he holds, Minotauros still manages to be one of the greater challenges Arle has had to face. His skills on both the battlefield and at Puyo Puyo are very high, and his trademark axe serves as the centerpiece of most of his moves.

Relationships

Rulue

Minotauros' mistress. It is unknown exactly how or when they met, but Minotauros is known to be highly devoted to Rulue, to the point of having a genuine romantic crush on his boss, a feeling Rulue does not reciprocate in any manner. In fact, Rulue is rather harsh towards him, notably more so than she is towards others. Despite many characters pointing out the abuse she usually doles out towards him, he gets defensive about this on her behalf, prompting him to attack those 'insult' her.

It should be noted that Rulue does genuinely care for him, as seen in Madou Monogatari for the SEGA Saturn, as she greatly worries over his well-being after he takes heavy damage by a Yog, even ordering him to return back home for his own sake when it doesn't look like he can continue adventuring with Rulue and Arle.

Arle Nadja

While he has gotten in her way time and again, Minotauros and Arle actually have a rather friendly relationship. As revealed in Minna, he reveals to Arle that really only ever fights her because either Rulue said so, or Arle has insulted Rulue somehow.

History

Madou Monogatari series

Minotauros debuted as a major antagonist in Madou Monogatari 3, where Rulue orders him to eliminate Arle. He is the final boss of the MSX2 and PC98 versions of the game.

Madou Monogatari (Saturn) features him as a playable character.

Puyo Puyo (1992)

Minotauros is the eleventh opponent in Scenario mode. He threatens Arle while dangerously swinging his axe around. Arle asks him to settle it in a Puyo match, an offer which he happily accepts.

In the English version, he is known as Max Minotaur. Aside from the fact that he claims to work for the Dark Prince, the exchange is identical.

Puyo Puyo Tsu

Minotauros resides on the penultimate floor. He frightens Arle with his axe swings.

Puyo Puyo Sun

He appears as a non-playable character during the Arle vs. Rulue cutscene. He fans Rulue with a giant leaf and, on Rulue's orders, uses the leaf to blow Arle (and inadvertently Rulue) into the ocean. He becomes a playable character in the GBC version.

Puyo Puyo~n

Minotauros cameos in the console version's Mission mode, but becomes a playable character in the GBC version. However, he is notably the only character to lack any voice clips whatsoever in the GBC version.

Puyo Puyo Box

Minotauros appears as the 5th boss with one of the 6 medals in Quest mode. Initially found with Rulue immediately after defeating Harpy, he is later found trying to procure the medal at the Ruins of the Zoh Daimaoh, which he ends up challenging Arle for. In the process of trying to get the medal by body slamming the pillar holding it (he refers to this as Final Beef Attack), he causes earthquakes that disrupt a nearby village. In Rally mode, he normally plays with OPP rule, but a version of him that fights in Yon rule can also appear.

Minna de Puyo Puyo

In Minna de Puyo Puyo, Minotauros states that he doesn't harbor a personal grudge against Arle, yet he immediately challenges Arle to a Puyo match when she insults Rulue. Unlike his previous two appearances as a playable character, Minotauros has voice clips in this game.

Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary

Minotauros does not appear in this game, but is mentioned when Arle meets Baldanders.

Puyo Puyo!! Quest

In this game, Minotauros shares his series, and has similar stats and skills to the following: Kikimora, Serilly, Harpy, and Ragnus.

Miscellaneous

In an animated short, Minotauros has a nightmare with Rulue seducing him. In another short, Rulue orders him to make her a pair of boots after seeing Arle's new pair, and he comically breaks down (with his pants coming off) after working overnight and Rulue beginning to show off her new boots to Arle.

Trivia

  • In Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche, Dragon Breath and Kracko use his AI strategy.
  • According to a special inlay from the Japanese gaming magazine Technopolis, he was planned to appear Madou Monogatari: ARS but didn't appear in the final product for unknown reasons.[1]
  • Minotauros' inconsistent English name is likely due to the fact that English generally drops the final syllable from the name of the mythological creature while other languages do not. Draco Centauros has similar name issues.
  • Minotauros' birthday is on February 24, sharing the same birthday with Rulue.
  • Minotauros appearing as a regular enemy in Kikimora's Clean Up suggests that there are more than one Minotauros.
