Raffina (romanized as Raffine prior to the English version of Puyo Puyo Tetris) is a snobby girl from a wealthy and prestigious family of mages[1] and a citizen of Primp Town. She is also the rival of Amitie, although their rivalry was never established, and can be assumed to be one-sided. She is not very good at magic, but she can use her pouch as a kind of "magic amplifier" to convert and integrate martial arts into magical attacks. Raffina is implied to be insecure about her weak magic power, when Lemres discovers her techniques rely on her pouch.

Biography

Appearance

Raffina is a teenage girl with long pink hair that curls in four huge bangs in the back, with a hair decoration that resembles a stylized wing and turquoise earrings. Throughout the series she has minor design changes, but consistently she wears orange and yellow attire loosely based on typical school uniform. She wears a long sleeve shirt with a white shirt underneath tied with a purple bow, an orange skirt, a pouch tied with a white belt, long socks with orange and yellow stripes, and a pair of orange shoes with purple bow laces. Underneath her skirt is a pair of orange shorts.

In Puyo Puyo Fever, her shoes are pointed upwards similar to stereotypical elf shoes, but later games would change it to standard shoes.

Between Puyo Puyo Fever and Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, her sleeves would have orange and yellow stripes similar to her socks, but starting with Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary it's instead a solid orange with a yellow rim.

Personality

Raffina has a rather snobbish personality that compliments her rich upbringing. She presents herself as being a prim and proper young lady that's above her peers, isn't afraid to belittle those she considers beneath her, and is seeking out someone to be her prince. She is also very self-confident, sometimes to the point of being egotistical. Despite this, it's implied her confidence is something of a facade, hiding away insecurities about her below-average magic power.

Abilities

Raffina is a martial artist, similar to Rulue. Unlike her, however, Raffina's punches and kicks serve as her method of casting magic, something the latter conspicuously lacks. All of her spells and some shouts such as Allumage (ignition), Fort (strong), are in French. Similarly to Amitie and Arle, her spells are elemental in nature, mostly involving weather. In her debut game Puyo Puyo Fever her spells consisted of Étincelle (spark), Grêle (hail), Avalanche (avalanche) and Feu d'Arti, short for Feu d'Artifice (firework), culminating in Ciel Arc (rainbow). As of Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Chronicle, her spells were replaced with Neige (snow), Flamme (flame) and Décharge (discharge). The spells Feu d'Arti and Ciel Arc carry over as well however most of her spells from Puyo Puyo Fever did not. In the English version of Puyo Puyo Tetris, her spells are instead rendered in English; however, in the English releases of Puyo Puyo Fever, she continues to cast in French. She has also used Averse (shower), Orage (thunderstorm) and Rage Soleil (rage sun).

Raffina's overall magic power, however, is below average. To compensate, she carries a pouch that amplifies her magic to more suitable levels. It is unknown how weak her magic is without her pouch.

Relationships

Accord

Accord has taken on different viewpoints on Raffina across different games. In the English localization of Puyo Puyo Fever, Accord expresses dislike toward Raffina after knocking her unconscious; this was not present in the original text. However in Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, Accord makes a nice comment about her in Training mode, which may lead one to confusion, if they have played the English version of Puyo Puyo Fever.

In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Accord is rather impressed by Raffina's training efforts outside of school. She says she is an interesting and gifted girl, what with her strength and confidence, although she does acknowledge her occasional brashness.

Likewise, Raffina appears to greatly admire Accord and is eager to show off her abilities to her, as observed in her story in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary when she wishes to show off a new, perfected technique to Ms. Accord.

Klug

Raffina tends to butt heads with Klug because of their prideful dispositions, they will often get into arguments at even the slightest disagreement. She perceives him as an obnoxious goody two-shoes and has even been shown to curse in his presence in the English localization of Puyo Puyo Fever.

She also does not appear to consider him much of a friend either (if at all), as observed in Puyo Puyo Fever 2 when she makes next to no effort to help rescue Klug while he is under the influence of Possessed Klug, as she instead chooses to take the Stone of Moon for herself and deliver it to Lemres.

Amitie

Raffina has a one-sided (on her part) rivalry with her classmate, Amitie. She is often condescending towards Amitie due to her obliviousness to the finer things in life and general cluelessness. However, she does consider Amitie to be a fairly competent rival in Puyo Puyo battles. While Amitie does not reciprocate the rivalry, she does admire Raffina's determination greatly.

Rulue

Raffina is speculated to be the Primp Town counterpart of Rulue, as both are key rivals of the main protagonists and both favor utilizing martial arts over magic. In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, the two are even seen becoming friends as they bond over their training and their similar prim and proper personalities. Their friendship is further elaborated in the fourth edition of Puyo Puyo Drama CD.

History

Puyo Puyo Fever

Raffina is the protagonist in the Hara Hara Course. Like Amitie, she sets out to find Accord's flying cane.

She first appears as the initial opponent of the Waku Waku Course, and her defeat there precedes the whole of her story. Across her story, she fights (and defeats) Onion Pixie, Klug, Ocean Prince, Tarutaru, Yu, Hohow Bird, Accord herself, and either Popoi or Carbuncle.

Puyo Puyo Fever 2

Like Amitie and Sig, Raffina has three courses in the story mode.

The only time she is fought against is in the RunRun course as Amitie, in which she is the first opponent.

In Waku Waku Course, Raffina is asked by Butler to look for the missing prince. On the way, she imagines the prince being a handsome man turned into a fish form. She found Ocean Prince with Lemres towards the end, and made the prince return to his human form against his will.

Puyo Puyo!! Quest

Raffina is available as a yellow card in this game. She is in the same series with Amitie, Sig, Rider and Klug, having similarly distributed skills and stats. For the Sakura Festival event from April 1, 2014, Raffina receives a redesigned alt named Sakura Raffina, donning an orange, traditional Japanese-styled outfit with cherry blossom petal motifs.

Puyo Puyo!! Quest Arcade

Raffina is available as a playable character in this game. She is an Attack Type character.

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Raffina plays a similar role to Feli and Rulue. She is affected by the impending merging of the Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds, causing her to "act kooky". She 'Swap' battles Amitie in an attempt to halt her (and the crew's) attempts to fix the merging of the worlds. After her defeat, she flees to Primp Town with the other two of the 'tainted' trio. Raffina runs into Sig, being interrupted by Amitie shortly after. Another 'Swap' defeat at Amitie's hands, returns her to her normal self.

Trivia

  • Her own name is derived from the French word raffiné, meaning "refined".
    • In the English release of Puyo Puyo Fever, Raffina was spelled as "Raffine". This was updated in Puyo Puyo Tetris to better reflect the original pronunciation.
    • The name "Raffina" is a very rare surname with recorded bearers in the 1940 US census. Curiously, "Raffine" seems to be relatively more common than "Raffina", despite still being rare.
  • An article in Monthly Arcadia reveals several facts about her, including:[1].
    • She is the youngest of three daughters and hails from a prestigious and honorable family of mages.
    • The pouch she uses is a "magic amplifier" that gathers tiny traces of magic from the surroundings and amplifies their power by using her melee attacks as a catalyst and a medium to amplify its power.
    • Her patronizing attitude towards Amitie and her one-sided rivalry are the results of her inferiority complex. While she has low magical aptitude, Amitie often demonstrates a great amount of magical ability at random, which irritates Raffina.
  • Alternate Voice notes:
    • In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, she turns into a scared voice like Ocean Prince in Puyo Puyo Chronicle.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris, she has drowsy voice like Rulue in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Ecolo in Puyo Puyo Chronicle and Arle in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
      • In the English version, like Arle, she speaks in what seems to be a more serious tone.
    • In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, she has an overall soft voice.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, her voice becomes childlike, reminiscent of her Mini Puyo Fever voice from Puyo Puyo 7, but with a softer tone. She shares this motif with her fellow magic school students Amitie, Sig, Klug, and Lidelle. Also, all "Sa" lines (except Spell 3) are changed to "Cha" lines.
      • In the English version, most of her alternate voice clips are reused from the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, and her new voice clips retain the same tone.
